Holiday Gift Giving Guide – What to Get Dad

In Fatherhood by The Unexpected Dad0 Comments

Not sure what to get the Dad/Husband/Son in your life?  Don’t put off your gift giving shopping! This article is for everyone that needs to get a gift for the man in their life.  Most items on this list are very affordable and make great gifts; read on for some holiday gift giving suggestions.

This small sum of money is generally enough to buy coffee or a doughnut. Hey, it’s still a doughnut! The links below are affiliate links.

Pocket Knife

Every father, *nay*, every man should have a pocket knife.  If the man in your life does not have one, I guess it is now up to you to give him one as a gift.  There are many different types and styles, but I personally like the smaller knives with 2 or 3 blades that fit nicely into my pocket.

These smaller pocket knives can go anywhere with dad, and they are great for: Opening packages (especially those tough to open toys in plastic packaging that frustrate him on Christmas morning), cutting an apple, whittling, admiring, sticking into a piece of wood and many other things.

For the Coffee Lover

Does dad love coffee?  Coffee related gifts are a great choice.  You can even do a combination gift:  Bag of whole coffee beans, coffee bean grinder, french press and a coffee cup.  I would like to get this as I’m sure would many other dads.

Traditional Wet Shave Equipment

An electric razor has never worked well for me, and in my opinion they are a complete waste of money. However up until a couple years ago, I had bought into the whole shave gel and multi-blade razors from Gillette et al.  You know, the razors that have names like “Mach 4” where you have to purchase a box of 10 refill “blades” for $35.00.  And they don’t even give you a very good shave.

Several years ago I made the switch to a traditional wet shave with a safety razor, good shaving cream and a brush.  The shave that I get from a wet shave is amazing.  It takes longer to go through the shaving process, but it is worth it.

With a traditional wet shave dad can slow down and concentrate on himself for 10-15 minutes out of the day.

With that in mind, a great gift idea is to give all the tools and accessories needed for a wet shave.  Dad will need:  A safety razor, razor blades, good quality shaving cream, a shaving brush and a shaving mug or bowl (see below for a few recommendations on Amazon).

NOTE:  There is a different technique required for this type of shave and it does take a little practice.  There are plenty of tutorial videos out on the internet to provide guidance.

A Journal

This web site actually started off as a written journal in a small, pocket-sized notebook.  I used the notebook to write down thoughts on fatherhood, important dates, Bible verses, shopping lists and anything else that popped into my head.

Men throughout history have written in journals including:  George S. Patton, Thomas Jefferson, George Lucas, John D. Rockefeller and many more.  Give one to dad as a gift this year.  His first journal entry can be about what a great gift he received!

Bible Cover/Carrier

My wife gave me a Bible cover as a gift and I love it.  Not only does it protect, but it also has room to carry other things around:  Pen, pencil, glasses, notebook, etc.

When the weather starts getting cold, feet need to keep warm.  Anytime dad is kicking around the house, he should have a nice warm pair of slippers to wear.  I like the type that have a fairly rigid sole and some warm lining  so my feet are warm and also protected from anything I may step on (toys).

Great for using around the house, at the job, hiking, camping or for every day carry.  I bring my multi-tool with me backpacking and it comes in handy for many different situations.  Around the house I have it easily accessible for quick projects.  This is a great gift for dad, he will find a wide variety of uses for it.

Roku or Chromecast

These are great gift ideas for those who like to watch movies or television shows on-demand.  The two operate a little differently, but the result is the same:  Stream movies and shows to your television from various content providers.  Note that some content provides will require extra subscriptions or fees (Netflix, Hulu, etc.).

Also note that the Chromecast works by receiving video “broadcasts” from an Andriod phone.

Remember that gifts don’t need to be very expensive. “Combination” gifts that include several different items that make up a theme (such as the coffee combination or wet shave combination described above) work out very well.
