Amazon Mom – Review

In Reviews by The Unexpected Dad9 Comments

I don’t know about everyone else, but Amazon is my first-stop shopping destination. I buy almost everything, other than food-stuffs and clothes, from Amazon; I at least check Amazon first. So when my sister mentioned Amazon Mom to me for purchasing diapers and wipes, I decided I would check into it. The membership is $99.00 a year, so the obvious question is: Is Amazon Mom worth the $99.00 annual fee?

Amazon describes this service as “… a membership program aimed at helping parents and caregivers in the prenatal through toddler years use Amazon to find and save on products their families need“. They appear to have the major brands of diapers and wipes, so let’s run down the costs vs. savings. I will be using Pampers Swaddlers Newborn diapers and Pampers Sensitive wipes for price comparisons; these are the products I currently have set up for subscriptions.

Amazon Mom includes:

  • 20% discount on eligible items (subscription required)
  • Amazon Prime (includes free 2 day shipping on eligible items)
  • Amazon Music
  • Amazon Video streaming service
  • Various coupons

A subscription means that you sign up to receive certain products to be shipped on a regular basis on a pre-determined frequency. So let’s break it down:

Amazon.Com (Mom)Amazon.Com (Standard)Wal-Mart (Online)Target (In-Store)
Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive Diapers Size N 80 Count$19.95$24.94$24.94$24.99
Pampers Sensitive Wipes 448 Count$8.78$10.97$10.97$10.99
Shipping (2 Day)*$0.00$33.10$23.94$0.00
Total / Month$28.73$69.01$62.92$38.73
Difference / Month$40.28$34.19$10.00

* = Based on shipment to Colorado Springs.
** = Based on Colorado and local sales tax.

Compared to regular Amazon prices and Wal-Mart online prices, Amazon Mom subscription discounts in conjunction with savings on 2-day shipping, will easily make up for the $99.00 annual subscription costs in less than 3 months.

Purchasing the same items in-store at a local Target, I’m looking at a savings of $10.00 / month, so it would take 10 months to make up the $99.00 annual fee, saving a total of $20.00 a year.

I admit that I was originally very reluctant to sign up for a subscription service, but Amazon makes it easy to manage. You can modify the products and quantities that are part of your subscription, and change frequency of delivery with no hassle. My experience has been that items ship on time and are delivered within the promised 2 business days.

Keep in mind that only certain products, and only certain product volume quantities, are eligible for Amazon Mom pricing and Amazon Prime 2-day shipping. I have not compared the online prices above with in-store prices, which I intend to do fairly soon. I will update this post with any new data and price comparisons.

Update 11/20/2014:

Obviously from the table above, I have done some comparisons between in-store pricing and online prices via Amazon Mom. Also, take a look at the comments below. My wife and I have had some issues in the last couple months with timing of our shipments from Amazon. Amazon shipped our last monthly supply a week early, and as a result we received two boxes of size “N” after we had switched to size “1”. Not a big deal I guess, Amazon makes it easy to return unneeded items.

Update 3/14/2016:

Amazon Mom is now Amazon Family!

Agreed. This is just one area that we see pop culture deprecating the role of the father.

Thanks for this review, it is helping us decide whether or not to join. Right now we are thinking we want to save more money and do cloth diapers but we will see how long that will last 🙂 once again thanks!

      Hi JLT,

Glad it helped. We are still evaluating Amazon Mom and we have found that timing is difficult. We just switched our daughter from Newborn size to size 1, and Amazon shipped our diapers early before we had a chance to change the size, so now we have a shipment of newborn diapers that we have to return.

I also have been pricing around diapers. I have a 2 year old and a 9 month old and I have priced many websites for diapers and Amazon mom is one of them against stores in my area..(I live in ny). For me, I find BJ.s wholesale club to still be the cheapest when it comes to diapers. I use pampers cruisers so that’s what I am pricing. For size 3 152 count they are 39.99 and with tax it comes to 43.50, but BJ.s gives you a $2.00 coupon and you can also use a manufacturers coupon, so with another $2.00 coupon that’s $4.00 dollars off so it saves you the tax so you end up paying $39.49 for the diapers. Just some thought with what I found in my research…hope it helps…

Thanks Lisa, this is great information! I think there are some very good options out there for price points on diapers and other baby-related items 🙂
